Total Fucking Darkness Set Their Hearts on Fire on Skyscraping Electronic Pop Single “This Is The Last Time”

Total Fucking Darkness is the ultimate chaotic supergroup, blending the talents of Torquil Campbell (Stars), Stephen Ramsay (Young Galaxy), and English studio wizard Tom McFall (known for his work with REM, Bloc Party, and Regina Spektor). Together, they create music that’s equal parts plastic pop, nihilistic handbag house, and razor-sharp absurdity. Their latest single, “Desolation Boys,” is a wild ride through throbbing synth basslines, relentless drum machines, and warped textures—all wrapped in McFall’s polished but delightfully unhinged production. Campbell’s dramatic croon and Ramsay’s melodic touch bring a theatrical edge to the track’s dance-floor-ready chaos.

Visually, Total Fucking Darkness leans into a post-apocalyptic club aesthetic—DIY grunge meets neon decadence. Picture late-night warehouse raves in a dystopian future, with glitchy VHS visuals, torn velvet curtains, and anarchic fashion that feels both campy and deadly serious. “Desolation Boys” is an anthem for the end times, filled with biting irony and infectious energy, where you can dance while the world crumbles around you.

Total Fucking Darkness return with their new single, “This Is The Last Time,” a soaring, emotionally charged slice of electronic pop that embraces the beauty of letting go, chasing dreams, and diving headfirst into the unknown. Featuring Torquil Campbell, Stephen Ramsay, and Tom McFall, the track channels the euphoric energy and nostalgic charm of late-’80s and early-’90s synth-pop, pairing sweeping melodies and shimmering electronics with an unapologetically dramatic sense of yearning. When asked about the inspiration behind the single, Ramsay offered a simple answer: “New Order.” The song came together just as effortlessly, with Campbell reportedly writing the lyrics after hearing the instrumental only once. “It may as well be called ‘Real Time’ because Torq wrote this in real time,” Ramsay explains. Beneath its larger-than-life production lies a surprisingly heartfelt message about embracing change, leaving the past behind, and finding the courage to pursue whatever comes next.

Sonically, “This Is The Last Time” finds Total Fucking Darkness fully embracing their obsession with vintage electronic music, delivering an oversized pop anthem that balances genuine sincerity with the trio’s signature irreverence. Rejecting modern production shortcuts in favor of an entirely analog approach, the band proudly declares, “No plug-ins, anywhere. This track is all analog, baby.” The result is a richly textured, nostalgia-soaked production that captures the romantic excess of classic synth-pop while maintaining a playful awareness of its own theatrical ambitions. Equal parts melancholy and exhilaration, the single transforms the uncertainty of new beginnings into something worth celebrating, offering an exciting first glimpse of the band’s forthcoming album, set for release in 2027.
