Samuel Virgo Completes Laughing in the Wilderness with New EP Virgo II
Sheffield-born, London-based artist Samuel Virgo blends indie, alternative, hip-hop, post-punk and left-field pop into a sound that favors individuality over genre boundaries. Formerly releasing music as Svirgo19, Virgo began a new chapter under his real name, creating work that feels more personal, vulnerable and reflective of his own experiences. Inspired by artists including Fontaines D.C., Tyler, The Creator, The 1975, Steve Lacy, Blood Orange and Dean Blunt, his self-produced music pairs memorable melodies with thoughtful, open-ended lyricism exploring identity, relationships, change and self-discovery.
Virgo has continued to build momentum through headline shows at The Finsbury and Temple of Art and Music, festival appearances including The Alternative Escape and BARE in Norway, and support from BBC Introducing Sheffield, COLORSxSTUDIO, Glide Magazine, DMY and Ones To Watch. He has also contributed music to the BBC Three series Boarders. With new single “Slip Away” offering another glimpse of his forthcoming EP, Virgo is moving toward what promises to be his most personal and fully realised project yet.
Sheffield-born, London-based artist Samuel Virgo continues to carve out his own lane in alternative music with Virgo II, the concluding chapter of his album project Laughing in the Wilderness, which combines the new EP with last year’s Virgo. Formerly releasing music under the moniker Svirgo19, Virgo has embraced a more personal and independent creative direction, blending indie, alternative, hip-hop and post-punk influences into a sound that refuses to be pinned down. Drawing inspiration from artists like Fontaines D.C., Tyler, The Creator, The 1975 and Steve Lacy, his songwriting explores identity, relationships, growing up and the uncertainties of navigating an increasingly complicated world. Written, produced and engineered entirely by Virgo himself, the project balances introspective lyricism with adventurous production, offering an honest and multifaceted look at his artistic evolution.
Closing out Virgo II is focus track “The Word,” a punchy, guitar-driven indie-alt-hip-hop offering inspired by Master Peace, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys and Monster Florence. Exploring the profound impact language can have on our lives, the track examines how a single word can change everything, bringing the project full circle as one of its earliest compositions. Elsewhere, “Slip Away” takes a more vulnerable approach, capturing the bittersweet experience of losing yourself in love through intimate vocals and understated instrumentation, while “ICU” shifts toward hypnotic, repetitive guitar work to confront manipulated narratives, deception and the increasingly blurred lines between truth and perception. Together, the tracks showcase Virgo’s ability to move between emotional vulnerability and sharp social observation without sacrificing his musical identity, bringing Laughing in the Wilderness to a fitting close while leaving plenty of room for whatever comes next.
