Roch Voisine Honours Gordon Lightfoot With ‘The Lightfoot Sessions’ – Out Now!

Few Canadian artists have built a career quite like Roch Voisine, whose music has connected with audiences across Canada, Europe and beyond for decades. Moving effortlessly between French and English, the acclaimed singer-songwriter has established himself as one of the country’s most recognizable musical voices, balancing heartfelt storytelling with an ability to connect across languages and generations. Throughout his career, Voisine has drawn inspiration from some of Canada’s greatest songwriters, but few have left as lasting an impression as Gordon Lightfoot, whose music first captured his imagination during his teenage years.

Growing up listening to Lightfoot’s celebrated compilation Gord’s Gold on repeat, Voisine developed an appreciation for the legendary songwriter’s ability to turn personal experiences, everyday emotions and pieces of Canadian history into unforgettable songs. That influence followed him throughout his own musical journey, shaping his understanding of storytelling and the emotional power of songwriting. Now, decades into a remarkable career, Voisine has earned his own place in Canadian music history, recently being inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame at Toronto’s Massey Hall. The recognition makes for a particularly meaningful full-circle moment, considering Lightfoot was the Hall’s very first inductee in 2003.

“’If You Could Read My Mind’ We’ve been performing this song in concert for a few years now, and it was probably the starting point for this new project. Everywhere we played it, the audience went wild. It’s no surprise that the song became so popular. It combines incredible craftsmanship, deep emotion and an unforgettable melody.”

Voisine now celebrates that lifelong musical influence with The Lightfoot Sessions, his 31st studio album, out now via Wax Records. Featuring 11 personal interpretations of Lightfoot’s most beloved compositions, the collection revisits the songs that helped shape Voisine’s musical identity while bringing his own perspective and decades of experience to the material. Opening with the sweeping “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” and closing with focus track “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” the album also features classics including “Carefree Highway,” “Early Morning Rain,” “Song for a Winter’s Night” and “If You Could Read My Mind.” The latter helped inspire the project after becoming a fan favourite during Voisine’s live performances, reminding him of just how deeply Lightfoot’s music continues to resonate with audiences.

Recorded in Montreal and co-produced by Voisine and Jason Lang, The Lightfoot Sessions brings together an accomplished group of musicians, including guitarist Jeff Smallwood, alongside Gabriel Bertrand Gagnon, Jean-Sébastien Baciu, Tommy Gauthier and Eric Lawrence. Blending acoustic guitars, mandolin, banjo, piano, violin and pedal steel, the album embraces the warmth and storytelling traditions that made Lightfoot’s music so timeless while giving Voisine room to make these songs his own. More than a straightforward tribute album, The Lightfoot Sessions is a celebration of Canadian songwriting and the lasting influence one artist can have on another. Voisine will also bring the project to the stage beginning November 3 in London, Ontario, touring Ontario and Atlantic Canada with an acoustic trio and performing Lightfoot’s classics alongside favourites from his own catalogue.
