If there was any benefit about our lives being put on pause throughout 2020, it is that many people found new outlets for their creative urges. On our latest peek into the indie world we are checking out “Maladaptive Daydreams”, the latest single from shn shn. Still fairly new to the professional music scene shn shn is a queer Black electronic music producer and creator out on a mission. Through shn shn’s work, they aim to break down genre barriers and open up new doors for experimental music to thrive. Busy working out her sounds core concepts in early 2020, shn shn released her self-produced/released debut EP out to the masses in October 2020. Ever-changing in nature, the EP showed listeners the foundation of what shn shn aims to build, with “Maladaptive Daydreams” being the next step.
What makes shn shn’s music interesting isn’t just her skills in production, but her use of experimental beats to add to her musical narrative. shn shn utilizes core essentials from both the ambient and world music genres while injecting the right amount of experimental assets to twist and contort into its own beast. “Maladaptive Daydreams” almost feels like a bit of a fever dream, being lulled to lose our senses by a siren but being lost in the world on our own journey. The world “Maladaptive Daydreams” lives in uses almost meditiative beats and cinematic overtures to create an allurring audible experience that is difficult to describe. It’s clear that shn shn’s music may exist in a similar vein to each other, but each release will find its own path to travel down and grow.
