Cassius Wolf & Das Abs Release “The Sound of the Guns”, A Reworked Track from the 1980s
Cassius Wolf & Das Abs is the musical collaboration between Cassius Wolf and Don Watson, two friends who met at school in Liverpool at age 11 and later became immersed in the city’s influential late-1970s music scene. While working at the iconic venue Eric’s Club, they were surrounded by the emerging post-punk movement and artists like Echo & the Bunnymen, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and The Teardrop Explodes. Inspired by that environment, they officially formed the band in 1978, shaping a sound that blended punk energy with melodic experimentation and a strong DIY ethos.
Decades later, the duo is revisiting their early recordings, restoring and remixing archival material to introduce their work to a new generation. Their return is also tied to the idea of “PCore,” a movement they describe as celebrating artists who continue pursuing creativity later in life, challenging the notion that artistic momentum has an expiration date. In that sense, Cassius Wolf & Das Abs represents both a rediscovery of Liverpool’s underground past and a statement about creative longevity and evolving artistic identity.
Alongside “I Can’t Reply,” the band’s new track “The Sound of the Guns” shows a broader side of their upcoming album An Afternoon in Bedlam (out 29 May 2026), moving from personal emotional strain into something much bigger and more outward-looking. Built on a punchy punk-reggae groove inspired by The Clash, it carries a real sense of urgency while focusing on the human cost of conflict and the civilians caught in it. Originally written in the early 1980s and later pulled from old cassette recordings, it feels like something rediscovered and made relevant again rather than simply recreated. The track was also co-written with Liverpool musician John McGOnle of Western Promise, grounding it in a specific local musical heritage.
Taken together, the releases hint at an album that’s constantly balancing two worlds: the personal and the political, memory and reinvention. An Afternoon in Bedlam builds from restored archival material but reshapes it with modern production, pulling influence from acts like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Can, and The Velvet Underground to create something that feels both nostalgic and immediate. Recorded mainly in a home studio, Cassius Wolf & Das Abs keep everything tightly under their control—writing, production, and visuals—treating the whole project like a fully formed world rather than just a collection of songs.
