Indie Rockers The Veils Release New Seventh Studio Album ‘Asphodels’
Since signing to Rough Trade Records at just 16, Finn Andrews and The Veils have built a remarkable career spanning over two decades and seven studio albums, including The Runaway Found (2004), Nux Vomica (2006), and their latest, Asphodels (2025). Known for their brooding, cinematic sound and Finn’s poetic songwriting, the band has earned a reputation as one of the great live acts of their generation. Their music has captivated filmmakers such as Paolo Sorrentino, Tim Burton, and David Lynch, who have featured their songs in soundtracks. Notably, their 2016 album Total Depravity featured a collaboration with El-P of Run the Jewels, further expanding their sonic palette.
Beyond The Veils, Finn released a deeply personal solo album, One Piece At A Time, in 2019. Now based in Aotearoa New Zealand with his partner and daughter, Finn continues to draw inspiration from his surroundings, infusing his work with themes of mythology, connection, and renewal. With their latest creative ventures, The Veils remain a vital force in modern music.
“I feel as though this album is the end result of a now disconcertingly long career in music. I think after your 7th album, much like turning 40, you should really just stop counting. I’ve learned a lot along the way, which I suppose is the whole point, and I’ve really distilled it all into these 9 songs. As always, I really just write about love and death – it’s a compulsion – and that is once again the case here. But I feel as though I’ve never been able to express this stuff rattling about in my brain quite as directly until now. I have rarely felt proud of anything I’ve made for very long, but this one feels different. It’s built on a strong foundation I think.” – The Veils Lead Singer Finn Andrews
Asphodels, the seventh studio album from The Veils, is a raw and introspective work, recorded live to tape over five days at Roundhead Studios in Aotearoa New Zealand. Marking two decades since their debut The Runaway Found, Finn Andrews reflects on his long career, describing the album as a culmination of everything he’s learned, distilled into nine deeply personal songs about love and death. Inspired by the ancient Greek flower of the Underworld, the album leans heavily on poetic influences, with Andrews citing Lorca, Ted Hughes, and Louis MacNeice as key inspirations. String arranger Victoria Kelly once again plays a central role, with her lush orchestrations acting as a vital, almost character-like element within the band’s dynamic.
Faced with financial limitations, Andrews took on the role of producer, stripping the album to its essentials and focusing on emotional resonance. The result is a record that balances quiet restraint with moments of soaring catharsis, embodying a confident simplicity born out of necessity. Following their celebrated return to live performances in 2023/24, The Veils will hit the road again in 2025 to support Asphodels, continuing their legacy as a band capable of crafting hauntingly powerful music both on record and on stage.
