Anohana The Flower We Saw That Day

This is an anime that has been watched by too few people. Anohana is the touching story of five (technically six) friends who deal with the stresses of life in different ways. What makes their story interesting however is that, when they were young their sixth friend died in a tragic accident. None of them has been able to move on from this tragic event however. The story continues as each character struggles with the inner turmoil they feel as each feels singularly responsible for her death. As we learn more about each character, their lives become more real, their pain more understandable and the ability to overcome it seems almost impossible. When they are finally able to fulfill their dead friend’s wish however, that’s when everyone is finally able to let go of the past.

This anime is without a doubt one of the prime examples of beautiful media. There is absolutely no question in my mind that it is one of the greatest anime of all time. The character development is phenomenal and provides a steamroller of emotions you’ll quickly find yourself crushed beneath. The characters are all realistic and believable which only makes the story that much more intense. There are no fancy effects in this one, it does not pretend to be anything it isn’t. What it is,  is a finely written anime that deserves more praise than I can give it in a single blog post and without spoilers. If you enjoy tearjerker shows look no further. Even if you don’t, give this a chance and stick through to the end. I promise you wont be disappointed.

  • This is actually one anime that I just started to watch. I absolutely love it so far. On the contrary, I heard it is also quite popular.

    • While it may be quite popular, it hasn’t reached the syndication it deserves. It’s not as popular as Death Note for example.

  • I like AnoHana a lot too, but I wouldn’t say too few people have seen it. By its myanimelist stats, it’s in the same popularity tier as Madoka Magica and Gintama.
