Toronto Singer DYLYN Leaves Electropop Behind in “Something to Lose” New Single + Music Video
Music is an incredibly interesting career path, you never know wherever you will end up on the genre spectrum. This week we are scrolling through our inbox and checked out “Something to Lose”, the latest single from artist DYLYN. Crafted by Gwendolyn Lewis, DYLYN learned early on in her life while living on the outskirts of Toronto. Hailing from a British father and a Chinese mother, DYLYN had an endless diet of 80s synth-rock to keep her company while she found her niche. Officially launching her career back in 2018, her debut single “Smoke” quietly became a sleeper hit and amassed over 100 million streams. Shout out to the Gacha Life anime community, who embraced the track within their community as a theme of family betrayal.
While DYLYN initially started finding traction within her electropop sound, DYLYN was determined to move past and grow as an artist. “Something to Lose” allows DYLYN to explore the darker side of her style, and this exploration bleeds all over the accompanying music video. Throwing the electropop beats out of the window, DYLYN utilizes brooding guitar work to move closer to childhood influences like Blondie and Led Zeppelin. The 80s synth-rock movement clearly left a remarkable impression and we can’t wait to see DYLYN moving forward and deeper into this renowned style.
“There seems to be a theme of an underlining darkness in this song, and most of the new record. I’ve enjoyed bringing out other characters that live within my spirit. It’s nice to dance along the dark side at times.” – DYLYN
