The Matrix: It’s All in the Code

The Matrix is one of those films that takes a second viewing to completely understand it (only the first film though, the rest blow). I decided to re-watch the entire trilogy in one day (don’t ask why). Over the next few weeks you will see each one of my reviews. I haven’t seen any of these films in years (at least since before I actually studied film in college) so lets give it a shot!

The Matrix stars Laurence Fishburne, Carie Anne Moss, and Keanu Reeves. Since this film was made, whenever I picture any of the above cast I picture them as their characters from this film. I will always seen Fishburne as Morpheus, Moss as Trinity, and Reeves as Neo. Anyways The Matrix follows a group of computer hackers who release Neo from “the matrix”. The matrix is a computer generated world created by the machines to enslave humanity for their resources. Apparently humans are great batteries. Morpheus’s goal is to prevent a war between the machines and the last remaining human colony, Zion.

I definitely enjoyed The Matrix a lot more than when I first saw it oh so many years ago. The entire first act of the film explains a lot about the human psyche and how individuals place themselves in society. In high school my film teacher had an interesting take about the Matrix. He explained to me that The Matrix is about coming out of the closet. In his eyes Neo is secretly a homosexual.

After my second viewing, I caught much more faults than I did the first time. First off, I did not enjoy the Cypher character. I know he was important to show that not everyone can handle living in the real world, but at the same time I thought he was unnecessary. In the final attack on Morpheus’s ship I felt they were way too calm when the sentinels broke through the hull. Also, I am really tired of seeing Agent Smith.

PROS:

• Interesting characters.
• Great first act.
• Kick Ass soundtrack.
• Superb main cast performances.

CONS:

• Already tired of seeing Agent Smith.
• Keanu Reeves neutral face.
