Mexican American Activist & Creative Alma Grace Embodies Frida Kahlo in New Single “Girl Fight”

Let’s face it, we live in a world littered with problems coming from all directions and music has always been a platform for activists to spread their message. On today’s dive into the world of indie music we are checking out “Girl Fight”, the newest single from musician and activist Alma Grace. Born and raised in New York City, Grace is a twenty-year-old activist, artist, and actress that is determined to spread her message through any medium possible. A Mexican-American herself, Grace’s multiracial background allows her to explore multiple influences and create her own sound that fits her message. Take the love of Selena, the pain into art of Lauryn Hill, and the wit/sass of Shania Twain, you meet Alma Grace. She attended her first protest when she was 13, and she continues to fight against the deportation of immigrants on a community-based level as well as in the U.S. Senate. As a creative, Grace has performed on stage on Broadway and the Lincoln Center as well as being featured in the Tribeca Film Festival in films alongside the likes of Tobey Maguire and Ed Zwick.

“At it’s core, it’s a bi-sexual and feminist anthem that rebels against the trope of women fighting over men,. we’re better off standing by each other.”  – Alma Grace

While Grace may be relatively new to the music scene, she has already found her space within the community. Launching her musical project just a year ago with her debut single “Adios Maria” and has continued to release plenty of singles throughout the year. Because of her Mexican-American heritage, Grace has always found herself connected to the life and works of artist Frida Kahlo. As Grace grew older, she began to recognize to the impact that Kahlo had on standards when it comes to topics like gender, race, and sexuality. Thus, the FRIDA EP was born. The first official single from the EP, “Girl Fight” is her interpretation of one of Kahlo’s famous stories. When her husband Diego Rivera cheated on her, Kahlo got revenge by cheating on him with the same woman. Grace uses “Girl Fight” to depict a bisexual anthem through her own blend of indie alt-pop for the masses. Make sure you check out Grace’s FRIDA EP when it drops in full on May 5th!
