Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 New Album ‘Na Dem’ Out Today, A Statement on Political and Societal Discourse
Seun Kuti has spent nearly three decades carrying forward the legacy of his father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, while firmly establishing himself as one of the genre’s most important modern voices. Taking over leadership of Egypt 80 following Fela’s passing in 1997, Seun has combined the band’s signature blend of infectious rhythms, powerful horn arrangements, and politically charged lyrics with his own perspective on social justice, inequality, and Pan-Africanism. Beyond music, he has remained an outspoken activist, participating in movements like #OccupyNigeria and #EndSARS, while reviving his father’s Movement of the People political party to continue advocating for change in Nigeria.
Across acclaimed releases including Many Things, From Africa with Fury: Rise, A Long Way Beginning, and the Grammy-nominated Black Times, Seun has expanded Afrobeat’s global reach through collaborations with artists such as Carlos Santana, Black Thought, Janelle Monáe, Damian Marley, Sampa The Great, Talib Kweli, and Vic Mensa. His 2024 album Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head), executive produced by Lenny Kravitz, marked a defining moment in his career, pairing bold political commentary with an evolved sound. The 2025 Deluxe Edition further broadened the album’s impact with new remixes and collaborations, reinforcing Seun Kuti’s status as one of contemporary music’s most fearless artists and advocates for cultural pride, resistance, and African unity.
“We are living in times where corruption tries to define our reality. This album is a call to resist, to stay awake, and to hold onto humanity.” – Seun Kuti
Globally acclaimed Afrobeat singer, songwriter, and activist Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 return with their powerful six-track album, Na Dem, a politically charged and musically ambitious project that continues to push the boundaries of Afrobeat while honoring its revolutionary roots. Produced by Femi Koleoso of the Mercury Prize-winning Ezra Collective, the album blends Afrobeat’s signature rhythms, intricate horn arrangements, and infectious grooves with influences from jazz, reggae, and rock. As the youngest son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, Seun has spent his career using music as a platform for political resistance and social commentary, and Na Dem continues that tradition with an unflinching examination of corruption, inequality, and institutional failure. However, beneath its confrontational message lies a deeper sense of hope, solidarity, and collective responsibility. Featuring an international lineup of musicians and recorded across Nigeria, Europe, South America, and the United States, the album reflects the evolving global identity of Egypt 80 while demonstrating Afrobeat’s enduring ability to connect cultures and inspire change.
Opening with the deeply personal “Adara,” named after Kuti’s daughter and translating to “hope for a better day,” the album begins on an uplifting note before moving into the introspective textures of “Real Life.” The explosive “Problems” brings Jamaican reggae heavyweight Kabaka Pyramid into the mix, bridging African and Caribbean musical traditions through a shared spirit of resistance, while “DJB” showcases Egypt 80’s legendary rhythm section and extraordinary instrumental chemistry. At the album’s center, the electrifying title track “Na Dem” features the unmistakable guitar work of Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, bringing a rebellious rock edge to the band’s commanding Afrobeat sound. Closing with the infectious grooves of “As How,” the record balances political urgency with musical celebration, delivering a dynamic collection that feels both deeply rooted in tradition and unmistakably contemporary. With Na Dem, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 prove that Afrobeat remains as relevant and revolutionary as ever, offering a powerful reminder that music can challenge authority, unite communities, and inspire hope for a better future.
