While we may still be new fans of her style of music, we can confidently say that you have to keep your eyes on today’s artist. On today’s dive into the indie world we are checking out “Aventura”, the newest single from the talented Alma Grace. Born and raised in New York City, Grace is a twenty-year-old activist, artist, and actress that is determined to spread her message through any medium possible. A Mexican-American herself, Grace’s multiracial background allows her to explore multiple influences and create her own sound that fits her message. Take the love of Selena, the pain into art of Lauryn Hill, and the wit/sass of Shania Twain, you meet Alma Grace. She attended her first protest when she was 13, and she continues to fight against the deportation of immigrants on a community-based level as well as in the U.S. Senate. As a creative, Grace has performed on stage on Broadway and the Lincoln Center as well as being featured in the Tribeca Film Festival in films alongside the likes of Tobey Maguire and Ed Zwick.
I loved the double meaning of the word “aventura”—it simultaneously means adventure and affair, and Frida certainly had her fill of both. Frida is rumored to have had affairs with everyone from Leon Trotsky to Georgia O’Keeffe. She lived her life loving whoever she wanted to love—a courageous philosophy for a woman in the early 1900s and in the modern-day.” – Alma Grace
While Alma’s connection and influence of Frida Kahlo lured us in, her talent as an artist hooked us and keeps us coming back. Having first heard of Alma with her previous single, the bisexual anthem “Girl Fight“, she popped back into our rotation with yet another narrative-driven pop gem “Aventura”. A beautiful ode to her multicultural and bilingual upbringing, Alma takes her already infectious pop style and seamlessly weaves both English and Spanish lyrics into an elegant tapestry of both cultures. Alma balances both her indie pop and Spanish pop sounds, neither taking charge and working together to not overtake each other. Whether it is Alma’s hopeful and alluring vocal performances or her Spanish influences, we can’t wait until the full FRIDA EP drops on May 5th.
