Fargo: Billy Bob Thornton is a Twisted Assassin

Hello everybody! This week we have an interesting pick. The TV mini-series based off of a popular Coen Brothers’ film, Fargo.

FARGO

STARRING: Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks, Martin Freeman

DIRECTOR: Noah Howley

GENRE: Crime Drama, Black Comedy

YEAR: 2014

COUNTRY: United States

A drifter named Lorne Malvo arrives in small-town Minnesota and influences the population with his malice and violence, including put-upon insurance salesman Lester Nygaard.

In January 2006, Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) passes through Bemidji, Minnesota, and influences put-upon insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman) with his malice and violence. Meanwhile, Deputy Molly Solverson (Allison Tolman) and Duluth police officer Gus Grimly (Colin Hanks) team up to solve a series of murders they believe may be linked to Malvo and Nygaard.

First off, the main draw to this show for me was the fact that I love Fargo. The film is fantastic and the tv show definitely doesn’t falter either. Martin Freeman (who I don’t particularly like replacing William H Macy) is fantastic in the show. He us evil, demented, yet naive and stupid and the same time. This performance is only followed with Billy Bob Thornton and Alison Tolman who give even better performances in their supporting roles.

The only tidbit complaint I have for this show is that it didn’t follow its source material as much as I would have liked. Also, while the main cast performed beautifully, I wouldn’t have cast any of the main cast in their individual roles. They really most have blown the casting director (out of the water).

PROS:

  • Main cast performances.
  • Supporting cast performances.
  • Intriguing story.

CONS:

  • Casting choices.
  • Loosely adapted from original film.

SCORE: 9.0 / 10
