3 Days To Kill: Kevin Costner Back in Action

Hello everybody! Today we have Kevin Costner’s new film, 3 Days to Kill.

3 DAYS TO KILL

DIRECTOR: McG

STARRING:  Kevin Costner, Amber Heard, Hailee Steinfeld, Connie Nielsen, Richard Sammel, Eriq Ebouaney

GENRE: Action, Thriller

YEAR: 2014

COUNTRY: United States, France

A dangerous international spy is determined to give up his high stakes life to finally build a closer relationship with his estranged wife and daughter, whom he’s previously kept at arm’s length to keep out of danger. But first, he must complete one last mission – even if it means juggling the two toughest assignments yet: hunting down the world’s most ruthless terrorist and looking after his teenage daughter for the first time in ten years, while his wife is out of town.

3 Days to Kill was definitely not the film I expected. After checking out the trailers, I thought it would be an over the top action flick along the lines of Liam Neeson’s Taken, but it wasn’t. 3 Days to Kill was directed by Luc Besson, who has definitely grown on me as a director.

I was surprised on how much I actually enjoyed 3 Days to Kill. I have enjoyed Kevin Costner’s performances in the past and this one was no exception. His portrayal as an estranged father who is dying was so damn believable that I felt bad for him and his family. I wasn’t particularly fond of Amber Heard’s character, but her performance was satisfying with what she was given to work with. The film was shot just like it was supposed to, and the film has some very interesting scenes that intrigued me on a different level.

While I was surprised watching 3 Days to Kill, I still want to point out a few things. I didn’t enjoy the antagonists in the film very much, if at all. The Albino and the Ghost were written way too one-dimensional, (even though that is common with Luc Besson films) and I felt that it took away exactly what the film needed. Also, why are the protagonists always expert marksmen? I get it he has had years of training but there is no way that you could hit every one of your targets.

PROS:

  • Interesting protagonists.
  • Character development.
  • Family relationships.
  • Kevin Costner is back!

CONS:

  • Disappointing antagonists.
  • One hit kills.
  • One-dimensional enemies.

SCORES: 8.5 / 10
