Zero Dark Thirty: Hunt for Osama Bin Laden

Hello everybody! Today we have the military war drama, Zero Dark Thirty.

ZERO DARK THIRTY

DIRECTOR: Kathyrn Bigelow

STARRING:  Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton

GENRE: War-thriller

YEAR: 2012

COUNTRY: United States

Maya is a CIA operative whose first experience is in the interrogation of prisoners following the Al Qaeda attacks against the U.S. on the 11th September 2001. She is a reluctant participant in extreme duress applied to the detainees, but believes that the truth may only be obtained through such tactics. For several years, she is single-minded in her pursuit of leads to uncover the whereabouts of Al Qaeda’s leader, Osama Bin Laden. Finally, in 2011, it appears that her work will pay off, and a U.S. Navy SEAL team is sent to kill or capture Bin Laden. But only Maya is confident Bin Laden is where she says he is.

Zero Dark Thirty is a film of epic proportions. Lets just say that I wanted to see it in the theatre, but never had the chance to. I saw it on Encore and had to just watch it. The main stars performances are amazing, they embodied they roles/characters perfectly. I actually felt for the characters, most notably Maya though. While Zero Dark Thirty isn’t the most accurate historical war drama there is, it is a pretty decent chronicle of the hunt for Osama Bin Ladin.

I have to give you a warning before watching this film, it is very slow! It has a just under three hour run time, and it felt as though it took at least five hours to finish (that would probably be about right as I fell asleep my first time watching it). During the actual operation in the final act of the film, there is little to no lighting. I could barely see any of the operation due to insufficient lighting, put the scenes that focused on the night vision and what little light that was used had me gripping the edge of my seat, even though I know the outcome.

PROS:

  • Main cast performance
  • Semi-accurate chronicle
  • Real, non one-dimensional characters

CONS:

  • Length
  • Pace
  • Use of lighting
  • Some filler

SCORE: 8.1 / 10
