Toronto Grunge Glam Rock Band The Effens Tease Big Moves in 2021 With New Single “Pavement Age”
There are very few markets that are more interesting to peer into from time to time, it is Toronto’s indie scene. On our latest peek into the scene we are checking out “Pavement Age, the newest single from the Toronto-based band The Effens. Joining the local rock scene back in 2018, The Effens caught the attention of local playmakers with their rather unique blend of elements from glam rock and grunge music. Consisting of talented musicians Austin Nops (Vocals, Guitar), Paul Theo (Guitar), Hannah Edgerton (Bass), and Fabian Kearns (Drums), each musician brings a different perspective to the overall sound of The Effens. The act has opened for many notable bands over the years, even earning a place on Toronto’s Top 50 Indie Bands of 2019! To cap off the year, The Effens even released their first self-titled record to a sold-out show during one of their highly energetic live performances.
Deciding to take on both glam rock and grunge genres, which many could argue have passed their prime but are seeing a resurgence in the digital age, is an interesting approach to a modern rock sound. For example, I personally would put The Effens in the same camp as bands like Greta Van Fleet, as on first listen I wouldn’t believe that the track was released in today’s age. Thanks to Austin’s gritty vocal performance, which feels likes a mix of Jon Lydon (Sex Pistols) and Tyler Glenn (Neon Trees), “Pavement Age” sounds like it belongs in the late 90s. However, guitarist Paul Theo’s solo gives us entry-level Tom Morello vibes, furthering this overall grunge and glam rock style. Next time we are up in Toronto we will definitely want to catch a The Effens performance live, as we bet the energy just bursts throughout the room. If this is the sound that they have developed after only two years, we can’t wait to see where exactly they take this sound.
