On our larest peek into the punk music world we are checking out Half Glow, the brand new LP from The Penske File. The Penske File embodies the true essence of passion and dedication, doing what they do purely for the love of the craft. Their music is a tribute to friendship, rock ‘n’ roll, creativity, and the profound sense of movement and catharsis it brings. They channel the highs and lows of life, using their music as a vessel to scream into the vast expanse, guided only by what feels right to them. Their live performances are nothing short of epic celebrations, embracing everything that is loud, spontaneous, and beautiful about life. Whether on festival stages or intimate D.I.Y spaces, The Penske File has spent the better part of a decade leading up to their album’s release, touring tirelessly across the globe from Vancouver to Hamburg and everywhere in between.
Their dedication and talent have not gone unnoticed, as they’ve been handpicked to perform alongside some of punk rock’s most legendary acts. Sharing stages with the likes of Bad Religion, The Menzingers, Anti-Flag, and The Hold Steady has been a testament to their incredible musical prowess and stage presence. With each passing year, The Penske File has grown both as musicians and individuals. Their journey since their last release, Salvation, has been one of maturation, but at the same time, they hold onto the youthful spirit that drives their music. This unique combination ensures that their sound will always be infused with the authentic rawness that makes them who they are.
“This song existed in many iterations before the final version. I had the riff and chord structure kicking around for months, maybe years. At one point all of the lyrics to the tune were completely different. What really unlocked this song was a moment backstage, somewhere on tour in Germany. There was an acoustic guitar and a fully stocked fridge. Me and Alex were swapping some new song ideas and he played a version of the first verse that hit me in a special way. It seemed to sum up what I was trying to say with this song and a lot of the other tunes on the album. Months later, at home, I put that verse into the chord and melody structure of the tune and re-wrote much of the lyrics surrounding that sentiment. In essence, the song is about clawing for optimism amidst an overwhelming fear of the self and the modern world.” – Travis Miles (Vocalist/Guitarist)
The Penske File’s new album, Half Glow delves into the contrasting aspects of our world. It explores themes of love, loss, and coming of age in a world that feels like it’s falling apart. The album is a culmination of the lifelong musical collaboration between childhood friends James Hall, Travis Miles, and Alexander Standen, who form the band. Despite facing hardships like robberies, burnouts, and the pandemic during the album’s creation, they persevered and completed it. The album reflects their growth and maturity as individuals and musicians. With anthemic introspection, it captures the duality of life, reminiscent of bands like The Gaslight Anthem, PUP, Against Me!, The Menzingers, and Hot Water Music.
