If you haven’t been following the psy rock world and Elephant Stone, that needs to be fixed asap. On our latest peek at our northern neighbors we are checking out “History Repeating”, the latest from Elephant Stone. Based out of Montreal, this modern psy-rock band was created by musician Rishi Dhir as a different creative outlet. After performing with bands such as The Datsons and The High Dials, Dhir discovered his love for the sitar and telling his personal experiences, thus giving birth to Elephant Stone. Dhir quickly made a name for himself as a renowned sitar player, collaborating with the likes of Beck, and legendary cult bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, The Dream Syndicate, and many more. Elephant Stone has been active since releasing their first album in 2009, and with their new EP on the horizon, fans of psych-rock need to take notice.
“History has a haunting tendency to repeat itself, from the scars of colonialism to the rise of authoritarian regimes. It’s as if we’re trapped in a loop, forever replaying the same tragedies. ‘History Repeating’ is my way of confronting these harsh realities, particularly as they relate to my home country of Canada, which was built on the deeply troubling foundations of genocide and ethnic cleansing targeted at Indigenous peoples. In recent years, thanks to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the appalling truths about our past have been laid bare…This song serves as an urgent plea: let’s break the cycle. Let’s learn from the darkest chapters of our history to create a more just and compassionate future.” = Rishi Dhir
Montreal’s renowned psych-rock outfit, Elephant Stone, is gearing up for the release of their forthcoming album, “Back Into the Dream,” scheduled for February 23, 2024. Their latest single, “History Repeating,” offers a captivating blend of dreamy 60s psychedelia and modern high-fidelity production. This lush track is characterized by its swirling tambourines, jangling guitars, and floating pianos, creating a vivid sonic landscape that combines nostalgia with innovation. However, what truly sets “History Repeating” apart is its poignant lyrical content, which centers on the critical issue of Canadian Indigenous history and serves as a compelling plea for reparations for the nation’s native people. Elephant Stone’s artistry extends beyond music, as they use their platform to shed light on pressing social and political matters, making their upcoming album not only a musical journey but also a vehicle for meaningful social commentary.
Elephant Stone’s “History Repeating” is a testament to the band’s musical prowess and their commitment to social justice. This socially conscious track offers an immersive listening experience while addressing the historical injustices faced by Canada’s Indigenous communities. As fans anticipate the release of “Back Into the Dream,” they can look forward to a musical journey that is not only sonically engaging but also socially relevant, as Elephant Stone skillfully combines their art and activism to advocate for change and provoke thoughtful conversations.
