Black Swan: A Psychological Thriller About Dancing
Hello everybody! Here is my review for Natalie Portman’s sexy thriller Black Swan.
BLACK SWAN
TITLE: Black Swan
DIRECTOR: Darren Aronofsky
STARRING: Natalie Portman. Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder
GENRE: Psychological Thriller, Horror
YEAR: 2010
COUNTRY: United States
Black Swan is an interesting film about dancing. I never figured I would say those words, ever. Black Swan stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis as ballerinas performing the ballet Swan Lake. Natalie Portman plays Nina Sayers, the Swan Queen. Mila Kunis plays Lily, the Black Swan. We mainly follow Nina, who is a professional dancer living with her mother (who is also a former dancer, and a total bitch) as she struggles to encompass the part of the Swan Queen. The film shows Nina as she breaks down trying to perfect her role as she is constantly chastised by her peers.
Black Swan is quite a confusing film if you only watch it once. As this is my second viewing I caught a lot of things that I missed the first time. Darren Arnofsky did an excellent job showing the degradation of Nina’s mind as she tries to be a perfect swan queen. Especially during the final dance, when she physically sprouts wings during the dance and fully encompasses the Dark Swan. Arnofsky also did a great job at grossing you out. If you have an issue with skin intrusions, I’m warning you now.
Alright, now the best part of the review. As I stated above, my biggest issue with Black Swan is that the film is very confusing. It took me a second viewing to be able to understand the film fully (even though you can never really understand a film even if you had made it). My second issue is that the film is quite slow moving. You may lose interest while you are watching the film, but don’t! You won’t understand Black Swan if you jump right in the middle of it. Check out the trailer for the film below if you haven’t seen it:
PROS:
- Imagery at its finest.
- Psychological torture.
- Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis sex scene!
CONS:
- Slow Moving
- Confusing
- A psychological thriller about dancing.
- Too much unecessary sexual tension.
SCORE: 8.5 / 10

I liked this movie when it first came out, even though I could totally tell where the story was going and why. However, that’s just the logistics of it all, it’s a great movie and one that Portman deserved the Oscar for. Good review.
Thank you very much!
