Revolves around mysterious disappearances, world-wide, and specifically follows a group of people who are left behind in the suburban community of Mapleton. They must begin to rebuild their lives after the loss of more than 100 people.
The Leftovers takes place three years after a global “Rapture”, which caused the unexplainable disappearance of 2% of the world population. The story, presenting several new mysteries after the main unsolved mystery, focuses on the small group of people left behind in the fictional town of Mapleton, New York, outside of New York City, where they are trying to move on, while a mysterious cult known as the Guilty Remnant attempts to ensure that they don’t forget. (Mapleton is not to be confused with the real-life hamlet of thesame name).
The Leftovers is perhaps one of the most interesting series I have watched this year from HBO. While I am not completely sold on this show just yet (I’ll have to wait until season 2) but the story kept me interested to come back each week, or even after missing a couple of weeks. The main cast’s performances are spectacular, specifically Justin Theroux. He makes a complete dick bag of a cop actually come across as interesting. Tho is impressive for me since I have a bad history with police.
Currently, I only have a few issues with The Leftovers. I don’t like the majority of the supporting cast. I have found that they definitely have weaker performances than the main cast and even some of the characters border on outright annoying. My other main peeve is I wish that they would touch on the “Rapture”-esque event that occurs in the beginning of the series just a bit more. How come only 2%.
PROS:
- Main cast performances.
- Intriguing story.
- Social issues.
CONS:
- Supporting cast performances.
- Supporting characters.
- Background.
SCORE: 7.5 / 10
