Songwriter Brodie Christ Blends Honesty, Contrarian Fire, and Indie-Rock Swagger on New Album ‘Big Feelings’
Toronto indie rocker Brodie Christ (rhymes with wrist) returns with his second full-length album, Big Feelings, a bold and vulnerable statement that captures the full spectrum of human emotion. The record chronicles three transformative years in Christ’s life — marked by the passing of his father, the birth of his daughter, and a complete health and lifestyle reset that led him toward meditation, exercise, and daily Qigong. These shifts shape the album’s sound and soul: an unguarded blend of catharsis, reflection, and hard-won clarity. Recorded at Toronto’s Canterbury Music Co. with longtime producer Neil Whitford, Big Feelings explores contradiction and duality — it’s both gritty and serene, mournful and hopeful, chaotic and deeply centered.
At the heart of the record lies “In a loop,” a contemplative yet defiant centerpiece that distills Christ’s inner struggles into sound. The song captures the push and pull of breaking cycles — emotional, mental, or relational — only to find oneself drawn back into them. Its structure mirrors that tension: the verses flow freely, refusing repetition, while the climactic ending sees hypnotic guitar lines colliding with Gordon Hyland’s spontaneous saxophone runs. The result is both explosive and liberating, a sonic breakthrough that mirrors the personal breakthroughs Christ experienced in his own life.
Throughout the album, Christ is joined by an ensemble of trusted collaborators who bring warmth and depth to his songwriting. Drummer Jeremy Kleynhans (Alessia Cara, Jann Arden), bassist Kyle Teixeira (T. Thomason), and keyboardist Dean Aivaliotis (Aysanabee) reprise their roles from his debut, while vocalists Elise LeGrow and Mireya Gonzalez add soulful texture. Originally brought in for select moments, Hyland’s saxophone became the album’s emotional backbone, appearing on nearly every track and expanding its sonic palette. The result is an emotionally charged, deeply human album that embraces life’s imperfections with grace — an honest reflection of an artist learning to feel, heal, and grow in real time.
