Rising Star Serena Sun Takes Back Her “Body” With Empowering & Honest New Single

We applaud anyone who is able to take a traumatic life experience and use it to express your creativity and a brand new you. On our latest peek into the indie world we are checking out “Body”, the latest single from Serena Sun. Hailing from Vancouver, Canada, Serena might still be early on in her career but it already picking up momentum. With putting her honest lyrics at the center, Serena uses her music to explore the highs and lows of her life, stepping in to be the voice of many who can’t speak up or simply won’t. While she hasn’t released any major projects just yet, Serena already has 7 singles under her belt so far and a debut album on the horizon. As she cultivates the growing community around her, playmakers in the indie world are starting to take notice. Those 7 singles have already snagged spots on some of Spotify’s top playlists such as, ‘Fresh Finds: Pop,’ ‘Dope AF,’ and ‘It’s a Bop.

This song is about sexual assault. I was sexually assaulted by a friend in university and was really shaken by it. Ever since I started pursuing my career as a songwriter, I’ve wanted to write about it but haven’t been able to find the words until now. I was on a trip to New York when my dad sent me an article about a protest against sexual assault going on at a university here in Canada. I was in my hotel room at the time, and was so upset that sexual assault was still such a prevalent problem on university campuses (and in general) that I wrote this song in 30 minutes. It felt so good to finally express it and have the lyrics also feel empowering to sing. I felt that it was important to bring another woman on as a producer and songwriter, so I worked with the incredible Tiger Darrow to bring this song to life. I hope that anybody who has gone through a traumatic experience will listen to this song and feel empowered, and enjoy singing (or screaming) the lyrics “F*ck you for trying to claim my body.” – Serena Sun

When you’re in a similar position like we are, you tend to wade through quite a bit of pop music in order to find those diamonds in the rough. Serena’s use of her traumatic assault and transformation of the events into an empowering pop single is pure brilliance, appropriately capturing the feelings of the event but how much she has grown since it happened. While “Body” is pop music through and through, Serena enhances the single with her use of more ambient and atmospheric electronics to fully build out the track’s production. With “Body” Serena provides yet another example that just because the genre is pop music doesn’t mean that the song can be emotionally vulnerable and tackle a sensitive subject with pure honesty. We simply can’t want for your major debut Serena Sun, because we can already ss that you are going to make some pretty waves.

Make sure you check out “Body” on Spotify below or on your favorite streaming platform!
