Polymath Artist Miles Francis Drops Alt-Pop Single “Popular”, Targeting Male Ego + Gender Identity
When you’re already known as one of the best-kept secrets in the NYC music scene, you know you’re on the right path. On our latest peak into the indie world we are heading to New York to check out “Popular”, the latest from Miles Francis. A well-known polymath artist and audiophile, Miles embraced the musical lifestyle incredibly early on in their life, Learning the drums at 6, then guitar, bass, keyboards, and other percussions, Miles quickly became a musician with any skillset that you could possibly need. As a talented working musician, Miles collaborated and performed with talented artists including Sharon Jones, Amber Mark, Angelique Kidjo, Allen Toussaint, Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), and many others. Since releasing their Swimmers EP back in 2018, Miles has released two singles in 2021 so far, “Service” and “Popular”. In order to support their latest drop, Miles even toured around NYC in the back of a pickup truck and performed impromptu concerts around the city.
“I grew up with Backstreet Boys posters lining my bedroom walls, floor to ceiling. That era of music is dear to my heart, but upon closer look those songs are ridden with anxiety, songs about male adolescence written by grown men. That anxiety and impulsiveness is the place from which ‘Popular’ grows out from.” – Miles Francis
When we look into the indie music world, most of the time we see indie-pop stars aiming to break through the ceiling in their industry. Frankly, we need more variety from indie artists, and Miles Francis has something to hold us over for now. Since they are considered a polymath, or someone who as a deep understanding of many different subjects across many different fields of interest, Miles takes many different musical styles and sounds to mash together into an alt-rock sound that they can be proud of. A song like “Popular”, which Miles says is a counter to the male ego and the toxicity of its true nature, needs an innovative alternative sound. We may have just been introduced to Miles Francis and their sound, but we can already agree with the masses…Miles is the best-kept secret in the New York indie music scene right now.
“Power is essential to the male ego. That ego is a house of cards, of course, threatened by even the slightest loss of control. These songs and videos are meant to illustrate that delicate balance between control and disarray.” – Miles Francis
