Sometimes you just need a good blast from the past to in order to give yourself a quick creative juice jump. On our latest visit over to Protocol we are checking out “Back To Where We Started” the latest drop from Nicky Romero and Afrojack. Romero is one of the modern producers to change and mold today’s electronic music scene how he sees fit. Not only has he founded one of the most prolific modern electronic music movements, but he is also constantly on DJ Mag’s Top 100 list year after year and has attributed heavily to the global spread of electronic music. Romero continues to surprise us, even dropping a mini-doc series back in 2019 and multiple successful releases now that he’s back on the wagon. Hell, he even put on one hell of a performance at the London opening of the Call of Duty League eSports tournament. Romero’s list of accomplishments keeps growing, now including a brand new partnership with Fader Pro and a release of his own NFT collection!
“After many years of friendship and remix work back and forth on each other’s imprints, it was time to finally level up in the form of our first official collaboration ever. Super happy we found a way to blend both styles into one hybrid club tune.” – Nicky Romero
“Nicky and I have been friends and worked together for many years, and we had a great time finally making our first official collaboration and performing it together during our back-to-back set at AMF this year!” – Afrojack
There is definitely something truly magical when an industry friend that you’ve worked parallel with for so many years finally makes things official. After years of friendship and making major contributions to each of their remix catalogs, Romero and Afrojack have finally pulled the trigger and dropped their first official collaboration with each other. Major playmakers during the golden age of EDM, both producers have made name for themselves within their own niches which makes the marriage of both subgenres beautiful. “Back To Where We Started” strikes the right balance between golden era progressive house and big room, with both styles seemingly melding together perfectly instead of vying for control. While we always thought that these two EDM maestros would run parallel to each other, their unexpected collaboration may have thrown us a bit off our game for the rest of the weekend.
