Multi-Instrumentalist Skyler Cocco Drops Chill-pop Single “The Drive”

Pop music has many different facets in today’s world, when someone tells you that they make pop music it could mean almost anything. This week’s dive into the indie world we are checking out “The Drive”, a brand new single from singer/songwriter Skyler Cocco. Born and raised in glorious New York, Skyler quickly discovered her love for music at the age of seven on her father’s 8-track. By her high school graduation, Skyler taught herself to play guitar, bass, and piano all completely by ear. Jump to 2017, where she dropped her debut album Reverie and snagged over 1 million downloads since. Taking the last few years to hone her skills and redevelop her sound, Skyler Cocco is back in a new chill pop vibe.

I wrote ‘The Drive’ to reflect on a time where I’ve said things I didn’t mean to my partner or lashed out in a way that made them feel insecure in the relationship,” she writes on the inspiration behind the song. “It’s the cooldown period after a fight, where you take some space to really let your own words resonate and see where you were wrong in a situation, and realize what you’re putting at stake by not changing those behaviors. I really wanted to write a love song that felt vulnerable and showed my true intentions, that I can hold myself accountable and change for someone who I wouldn’t want to live without.” –Skyler Cocco

While many artists have been taking quarantine to re-evaluate their careers and methodologies, others like Skyler Cocco were hard at work in the studio. Skyler Cocco is truly a skilled artist, as not only being a multi-instrumentalist but excelling in each step of the production. Producing, writing, mixing, and performing all of her own tracks, Skyler Cocco take “The Drive” as a chance to showcase her new blend of synth-pop and alt-rock. Fun fact, “The Drive” grew from a guitar sample from electro-pop trio MUNA’s Splice “World Saving Sample Pack”. Skyler submitted a demo into Splice’s competition around the pack and was a standout among the fellow entries. Now with support from her favorite band and an already eager audience, “The Drive” made it out to the public.
