Cassius Wolf & Das Abs Tap Into Post-Punk Energy on “Losing Sleep”

Cassius Wolf & Das Abs is the musical collaboration between Cassius Wolf and Don Watson, two friends who met at school in Liverpool at age 11 and later became immersed in the city’s influential late-1970s music scene. While working at the iconic venue Eric’s Club, they were surrounded by the emerging post-punk movement and artists like Echo & the Bunnymen, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and The Teardrop Explodes. Inspired by that environment, they officially formed the band in 1978, shaping a sound that blended punk energy with melodic experimentation and a strong DIY ethos.

Decades later, the duo is revisiting their early recordings, restoring and remixing archival material to introduce their work to a new generation. Their return is also tied to the idea of “PCore,” a movement they describe as celebrating artists who continue pursuing creativity later in life, challenging the notion that artistic momentum has an expiration date. In that sense, Cassius Wolf & Das Abs represents both a rediscovery of Liverpool’s underground past and a statement about creative longevity and evolving artistic identity.

The band’s latest single “Losing Sleep” offers another glimpse into the world of their upcoming album An Afternoon in Bedlam, arriving 29 May 2026. Leaning back into a more direct post-punk sound, the track blends driving guitars, restless energy and huge melodic hooks to capture the feeling of becoming completely consumed by someone. There’s an urgency running through the song that mirrors the emotional spiral at its core, where attraction slowly turns into fixation and every thought starts circling back to the same person. The result feels immediate, intense and deeply human, balancing raw emotion with a bright, anthemic edge.

The track also taps into the rich legacy of northern post-punk and melodic alternative music, drawing clear inspiration from artists like The Wild Swans, Echo & the Bunnymen and The Lightning Seeds. You can hear traces of Paul Simpson and Ian Broudie in the song’s emotional pull and melodic instincts, but “Losing Sleep” never feels stuck in the past. Instead, it channels those influences into something fresh and vibrant, combining shimmering nostalgia with a modern guitar-pop immediacy that makes the track feel both timeless and alive.
