Bagpipe-Blasting Punk Veterans The Real McKenzies Return With New LP On Yer Bike

Vancouver’s Celtic punk legends The Real McKenzies are back with “I Wanna Eat Sardines (With Yer Mother),” the first single from their upcoming album On Yer Bike (out May 29 via Stomp Records). It’s the band’s first release since leaving Fat Wreck Chords, and it’s pure, unfiltered McKenzie magic. For more than 30 years, frontman Paul McKenzie and his crew have been crisscrossing the globe with bagpipes, guitars, and a touring van that’s seen better days, bringing their wild blend of Scottish folk and punk rock to bars, clubs, and festivals everywhere. If you love The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys, or Flogging Molly, this one’s for you.

Over their long and famously chaotic career, The Real McKenzies have shared stages with everyone from NOFX and Rancid to Flogging Molly, Metallica, and the late Shane MacGowan, carving out a legacy as true pioneers of Celtic punk in North America. Long before the genre’s wider wave, the band built their reputation the old-fashioned way—relentless touring, roaring crowds, and songs made to be shouted at the top of your lungs. Their music has appeared in films, video games, and countless sweaty clubs, but the heart of the band has always been their wild, bagpipe-fueled live energy.

Vancouver Celtic punk lifers The Real McKenzies return with On Yer Bike, out now via Stomp Records, marking their first full-length since parting ways with Fat Wreck Chords. The album feels less like a reinvention and more like a continuation of a decades-long streak of defiant, hard-touring punk energy. Founded in 1992 by Paul McKenzie, the band has spent over 30 years fusing traditional Scottish folk melodies with raw punk aggression, carving out a space long before Celtic punk became festival shorthand. Through constant lineup changes and relentless touring, McKenzie has remained the driving force, keeping the band rooted in mischief, grit, and a refusal to slow down.

Across thirteen tracks, On Yer Bike delivers the band’s signature mix of bagpipe-driven chaos, shouted choruses, and barroom-ready punk anthems, alongside darker storytelling rooted in Scottish folklore. Songs like “I Wanna Eat Sardines (With Yer Mother)” lean into their trademark irreverence and singalong energy, while “Black Agnes” showcases sharper, more classic punk urgency. The Sawney Bean trilogy digs into grim historical myth, adding a macabre narrative layer to the album’s otherwise raucous tone. The result is a record that reinforces The Real McKenzies’ identity: loud, chaotic, deeply rooted in tradition, and still barreling forward with no sign of stopping.
