Singer Songwriter Brookyln Doran Unveils Full Range of Emotions in New Album “Fixer Upper”
The theme of this week is emotional pop, and if you’re not here for it…adjust your settings. On our latest peek into the indie world we are checking out FIXER UPPER, the latest major drop from Brooklyn Doran. Doran, originally from Northwestern Ontario and a prominent figure in the Toronto folk scene, recently ventured into new musical territory during the pandemic. This led to a collaboration with the Canadian punk band Cancer Bats, where she provided vocals for their album Psychic Jailbreak. Brooklyn joined the band for their 2022 tour across Canada and the UK, performing the track “Hammering On” with them each night. Doran’s music combines storytelling and songwriting, showcasing a harmonious blend of wit, humor, vulnerable lyrics, and haunting melodies. With her engaging storytelling and emotional honesty, she captivates audiences as a natural performer. Apart from music, Brooklyn has also collaborated with various charities and brands to promote acceptance and inclusion, including The Get Real Movement x Kiehl’s Canada campaign, The 519’s Will Munro Fund, Facebook Canada’s International Women’s Day in 2018, and NDP Canada’s Virtual Pride in 2021.
“We started recording this album before the pandemic and then the world shut down. Some of the singles were released in 2019 and 2020, whereas other tracks from this record like “Relics” and “Michigan State” were fully recorded before the pandemic, but we were able to be revisited and reshaped in the studio years later. It is a unique experience to be able to sit with these recordings for so long, and then to be able to go back and fix them up,” Brooklyn shares. “I guess that is why Fixer Upper feels like the best title for this collection of songs. As I grew and found myself more as an artist, I was able to let this album grow with me. I guess you could say that I feel like a bit of a fixer upper myself. This record represents both who I was then, and who I am now.” – Brooklyn Doran
In her eight-track collection known as FIXER UPPER, Doran not only showcases her growth as an artist but also shares personal stories from her own life. The album represents a sonic evolution for her, transitioning from her indie-folk roots to a more grunge-infused, alternative-pop sound. Each track delves into pivotal moments of transition, capturing the journey from her formative years to a new season of life and love. Through her folk-leaning tunes like “Michigan State” and “One Way Ticket,” Doran reflects on the process of moving on from the past. These songs explore themes of growth, resilience, and letting go. At the same time, she pays homage to her roots with tracks like “This Town Won’t Miss You,” which nostalgically recalls her hometown, and “Tomorrow Never Comes,” a heartfelt tribute to a dear friend who has passed away.
As Doran embraces new beginnings and starts a fresh chapter in her life, tracks like “Relics” mark the beginning of this journey. However, it is in songs like “Fuck That Guy” and her recent single “Wasted My Twenties” that her definitive transition and confident new sound shine through. These songs exemplify her empowered and self-assured approach as she steps into the next era of her career. As she enters this next stage, she’s kicking it off with an East Coast tour that is going to be a must for fans of rising stars.
