While we fell in love with the original, when you have a talented producer in the studio with you we can even fall in love with the remix. On our latest dive into the indie world we are checking out “Retrograde (Epic Remix)” from Annabel Gutherz. Officially debuting back in 2018, Annabel found the balance between current alternative pop and classic americana. Annabel introduced herself to the indie scene with her first philanthropic single “Legends”, where she donated all of the proceeds to support various charities in Montreal. After making her debut, she has spent the last few years honing her craft at Berklee College of Music and is now ready to re-introduce herself as a musician to the world. Today’s single is actually the first off her upcoming album which we should be hearing sometime later this year.
“It was so amazing and humbling getting to work with Bret ‘Epic’ Mazur on this remi. I am so grateful for his talents and for the summer spin on he put on the song.” – Annabel
After keeping an eye on Annabel’s career for a hot minute now, we’ve come to the conclusion that she might be becoming part chameleon. For example, the last time we had Annabel kicking around Modern Neon was for her debut album which was filled to the brim with soft and vulnerable ballads. However, as the latest single to come out of Annabel’s camp, “Retrograde” is a pop-rock gem that leads with earwormy pop hooks and driving instrumentals that build that track to an entirely new level. “Retrograde” is easily the next step in Annabel’s career, basically starting a metamorphosis of the introspective ballad singer we once knew. While we fell in love with the original transformation, Annabel was able to snag talented producer Bret “Epic” Mazur of Crazy Town fame to put a more live and dynamic spin on the single. Epic finds just the right amount of instrumentals and dynamic range to add to the song so that it doesn’t completely overwhelm and envelop Annabel’s performance. Mercury might be in retrograde, but we’ve already completely fallen for Annabel’s “Retrograde” and want more of this new pop-rock variant ASAP.
