The alternative rock scene is an oversaturated market, but plenty of interesting musicians still continue to break through the class ceiling. On our latest dive into the indie world we have “Same”, the latest single from Will Powers. Conceptually born as the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Oli Palkovits, Will Powers has been kicking around in the Canadian indie scene since 2017. Releasing his first self-released album Flowers of Atacama that same year, Oli snagged his first taste of success by winning the 2019 NOFMA Outstanding Album award. After moving to Montreal following the album’s release, where Oli struck inspiration gold and continued to write the majority of Will Powers debut EPs. Now back in Sudbury, Oli is currently in production on multiple albums with members of Murder Murder and Tommy and the Commies.
Since the genre of alternative rock is rather encompassing due to its vagueness, you should be able to find your own litter corner of happiness under the umbrella somewhere. While he may still be a bit green behind the ears according to some, Will Powers has quickly developed a style all of his own, deriving from core elements of alt, grunge, and psychedelic rock. “Same” serves as a medium for Will Powers to showcase this fresh melting pot of genres, simultaneously intriguing us and invoking strong nostalgic vibes. The world of alternative rock is a large and varied one and the real question is…will there be a place for Will Powers? Will he be able to break through the noise? We will have to pay attention to his career to find out.
