Toronto Punk Firebrands BAD WAITRESS Dive Into Desire and Disdain on New Single “I Only Like You When I’m Drunk”

Toronto art-punk quartet Bad Waitress return with “I Only Like You When I’m Drunk,” the second single from their upcoming album, In The Hollow, out October 30 via Stomp Records. Following “Lovin’ Kind,” the track dives into the ugly overlap between attraction, intoxication and self-disgust, pairing jagged guitars, wiry post-punk tension and garage-punk abrasion with a narrator who is simultaneously repulsed by and drawn toward the person at the song’s centre. As the refrain repeats, the confession becomes less like an excuse and more like a self-indictment, with the song gradually unraveling into a messy rush of shame, frustration and release.

Recorded with Josh Korody at Toronto’s Wychwood Sound and produced by the band, In The Hollow explores isolation, shifting relationships, identity, gender and sexuality without forcing those experiences into easy resolutions. “I Only Like You When I’m Drunk” captures that uncertainty at its rawest, staying inside the contradiction rather than trying to resolve it — a fitting example of the confrontational, darkly funny edge that has defined Bad Waitress since their rise through Toronto’s punk underground.

Unlike “Lovin’ Kind,” which kept intimacy at a distance, “I Only Like You When I’m Drunk” dives straight into the mess of it. Both songs explore desire and self-preservation, but this one is sweatier, more impulsive and less interested in pretending anyone is in control. The narrator knows the attraction is a bad idea and recognizes the disgust, shame and self-sabotage wrapped up in it, yet that awareness does little to stop the pull.

That tension fits the larger world of In The Hollow, an album less concerned with neat transformation than with the baggage that survives it — old relationships, instincts and versions of yourself that resurface at the worst possible moments. “I Only Like You When I’m Drunk” catches Bad Waitress right in that unresolved space, where growth and regression can exist side by side and sometimes the contradiction itself is the point.
