The Counselor: Plenty of Dirty, Horrible Themes

Hello everybody! Today we have a film called The Counselor. Believe me, its not what you think.

THE COUNSELOR

DIRECTOR: Ridley Scott

STARRING: Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt

GENRE: Thriller

YEAR: 2013

COUNTRY: United States, United Kingdom

A rich and successful lawyer, the Counselor, is about to get married to his fiancée but soon becomes entangled in a complex drug plot with a middle-man known as Westray. The plan ends up taking a horrible twist and he must protect himself and his soon to be bride as the truth of the drug business is uncovered and targets are eliminated. For warning, this film is an insanely complex drug ring story.

The Counselor is one of the movies that barely catch your eye out when you are casually checking out the Redbox machine at your local supermarket. After looking at the promo thumbnail for a few moments, I couldn’t figure out what exactly the movie was about but I picked it up anyway. The Counselor features an ensemble cast directed by Ridley Scott including the likes of Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, and Javier Bardem. Pitt, Diaz, Fassbender, Cruz, and Bardem portray their characters with expert precision, even if bogged down by a confusing plot. Also, did I mention that Cameron Diaz is a bad ass? This role is so out of her element and she killed it! She should do more roles just like this.

The Counselor is very confusing film to begin with, and the characters are even more out there than the plot. Beyond the main cast, I felt that the overall performances were far from satisfactory. I was even iffy on Brad Pitt, but his performance was pretty decent for how his character was written. The really disappointing thing is that since the plot/story confused me beyond belief, I didn’t even find any interest in it. I really wanted to turn the film off helfway through the second act, but I just mustered my way through.

PROS:

  •  Ensemble cast.
  • Decent performances.
  • Cameron Diaz…WTF?

CONS:

  •  Supporting cast performances.
  • Confusing as hell plot.
  • Not incredibly interesting.
  • Couldn’t catch my attention.

SCORE:  7.0 / 10
