Samuel Virgo Explores Losing Yourself in Love on “Slip Away”
Sheffield-born, London-based artist Samuel Virgo blends indie, alternative, hip-hop, post-punk and left-field pop into a sound that favors individuality over genre boundaries. Formerly releasing music as Svirgo19, Virgo began a new chapter under his real name, creating work that feels more personal, vulnerable and reflective of his own experiences. Inspired by artists including Fontaines D.C., Tyler, The Creator, The 1975, Steve Lacy, Blood Orange and Dean Blunt, his self-produced music pairs memorable melodies with thoughtful, open-ended lyricism exploring identity, relationships, change and self-discovery.
Virgo has continued to build momentum through headline shows at The Finsbury and Temple of Art and Music, festival appearances including The Alternative Escape and BARE in Norway, and support from BBC Introducing Sheffield, COLORSxSTUDIO, Glide Magazine, DMY and Ones To Watch. He has also contributed music to the BBC Three series Boarders. With new single “Slip Away” offering another glimpse of his forthcoming EP, Virgo is moving toward what promises to be his most personal and fully realised project yet.
His latest single, “Slip Away,” is a melancholic alternative love song that finds Samuel Virgo exploring the feeling of losing parts of yourself while moving in and out of love. Built around intimate vocals, soft guitars and understated production, the track strips things back to highlight one of the most vulnerable moments on his forthcoming project. Rather than leaning into dramatic heartbreak, Virgo focuses on the quieter emotional confusion that comes when a relationship begins to blur your sense of identity.
“Slip Away” follows “ICU,” which introduced the upcoming EP with a darker exploration of distorted narratives, hidden truths and the ways perception can be shaped. Entirely written, produced and engineered by Virgo himself, the project moves through identity, relationships, growing up and personal experience, with each song revealing a different side of his songwriting and creative perspective.
