If we have learned anything from covering electronic music over the years is that minimalism can sure go a long way. On our latest visit over to Protocol we are checking out “Walk Away”, the latest single from SOLR & Rechler. Nicky Romero’s Protocol Recordings has been a mover and a shaker in the modern electronic dance scene, allowing plenty of new artists to burst onto the scene and make their mark. While Protocol has been known for progressive house music, its catalog has expanded to encompass a wide diversity of sounds. Protocol is a major player every year at Miami Music Week, and despite not having the chance to perform this year, the label has other methods to put their overwhelmingly talented roster out on display. This latest drop shows that even after hundreds of releases, Protocol will definitely not take a beat and keep the momentum flowing. While we have been treated to a handful of solid singles from Rechler as of late, adding Greek newcomer SOLR to the mix is going to be interesting.
While have been treated to a couple of different tracks from Israeli producer Rechler, he’s quickly becoming a wildcard in terms of production style and sound. We thought we had Rechler pinned to a particular house music style, but then SOLR joins in on the production and transforms the track into a deep, minimalist, and soulful house gem. Setting the tone right out of the gate with a soulful R&B male singer sample, the vocals fade away to an almost dream-like science fiction sound. Through the mesmerizing production we are witnessing the singer’s internal debate over a one-sided love…should he pursue or let it go completely? Utilizing muted melodies and a bassline that grows and pulses throughout the track, “Walk Away” might just be the minimal house single that we were looking for to close out 2021.
