Madisyn Gifford Releases Emotional & Powerful New Album “Sleeping on the Ceiling”

There is something truly magical about the fragility of an artist, especially one who is willing to open up to their audience. On our latest peek into the indie world we are checking out Sleeping on the Ceiling, the latest album drop from Madisyn Gifford. She may have just broken onto the Vancouver indie scene last fall, she is quickly finding her home. Being adept at singing basically since she could talk, Madisyn has been on the path to embracing the life of a musician since she was able to fathom the concept. Now at a mere twenty years old, Madisyn has plenty to tell listeners, along with the skills to back it up. Releasing her debut single “Without You” back in late 2020, she has already amassed almost 200k online streams. After a very active and prosperous 2021, Madisyn is ready to take the rest of 2022 by the horns and make 2022 her year.

When I started writing this album in the summer of 2021 my only goal was to write songs that scared me. I wanted to make music that was so vulnerable I would catch myself thinking “oh my gosh I can’t believe I’m actually gonna say that” constantly throughout the process of making it. It tells the story of growing up and out of some of the darkest places I’ve ever been in with the “slow and steady wins the race” mentality I had while living through it. It’s about grieving the experiences that my younger self had to go through in relationships and navigating how to move on into new ones while doing that. It’s the most honestly I’ve ever spoken about my past and my mental health, and most importantly it is a love letter to my female friendships. This album is most definitely my favourite thing I have ever made and I am so so excited to share it.” – Madisyn Gifford

Madisyn fearlessly explores various themes throughout Sleeping on the Ceiling, including her battles with mental health, navigating through tumultuous relationships, cherishing the profound bonds of friendship, and ultimately discovering self-acceptance. With unyielding courage and vulnerability, Madisyn fearlessly bares her soul, leaving no stone unturned and no emotion unexplored in her 13-track compilation. Sleeping on the Ceiling features a captivating mix of previously unreleased original songs, alongside fan favorites that have garnered acclaim for their profound introspection and catchy melodies. Among the standout tracks is the deeply contemplative “Dancing On This Line,” which delves into the complexities of self-reflection and personal growth. The album also includes the infectious and celebratory anthem “21,” an ode to embracing life’s milestones, as well as the light-hearted and self-satirical tracks “Hospital Beds” and “Prettiest Bitch,” which add a touch of playful irony to the collection.

One particular track that strikes an emotional chord is “For Shaughnessy,” a song that holds significant meaning for Madisyn. Originally written as a heartfelt tribute to her best friend, it was never intended to be recorded or released. However, recognizing the profound impact of their friendship and the universality of the emotions captured in the song, Madisyn chose to share it with the world.
