“Feeling overwhelmed, I was faced with myself alone and the choices I had made over the past several years. With conflicted feelings of longing, remorse, and loneliness, I felt caged by a sentiment I could neither explain nor understand. I was alone. My mind had fooled me.
My tears felt endless and yet somehow this new solitude wrapped itself around my sadness like a giant cozy blanket I could not imagine emerging from ever again. A little piece of me had died, yet I found a little peace inside. A little piece of me had died, yet I found a little peace inside.” – iskwē
iskwē’s latest album, “nīna,” emerges from a period of introspection and transformation for the Cree Métis artist. Retreating to Mexico amidst a whirlwind of personal highs and lows, she crafted a deeply autobiographical collection of 10 songs that explore the gamut of human emotion. The album’s title, “nīna,” meaning “me” in Cree, speaks to its intensely personal nature, with each track serving as a vignette of love, passion, anger, betrayal, and loss. Collaborating with acclaimed producer Damian Taylor, iskwē weaves together a mesmerizing tapestry of sound, blending elements of late 90s R&B with contemporary flair, resulting in an ethereal and captivating sonic experience. From the Top 20 Alt-Rock charting lead single “I Get High” ft. Nina Hagen to the hypnotic rhythms that evoke the tropical landscapes of Mexico, “nīna” invites listeners on a journey of self-discovery and resilience, illuminating the power of music to navigate life’s complexities and connect us to our deepest emotions. Each track unfolds like a chapter in iskwē’s ongoing narrative, offering a glimpse into her soul and inviting audiences to explore their own inner landscapes alongside her.
