Icelandic Post-Punk Band GRÓA Share New Single “Cranberry”

We don’t often head to Iceland for our dose of rock music, so let’s change that. On our initial visit to Iceland we are checking out “Cranberry”, the latest single from GRÓA . Earlier this year, GRÓA reissued their acclaimed albums, Í Glimmerheimi (2019) and What I Like to Do (2021), now available on vinyl and CD with exclusive bonus tracks. The Reykjavík-based band, featuring sisters Karólína (Karó) and Hrafnhildur Einars Maríudóttir (Hrabba) along with Fríða Björg Pétursdóttir, first gained attention with their 2018 debut and a breakthrough performance at the 2019 Iceland Airwaves festival.

Known for their dynamic sound and captivating live shows, GRÓA has opened for acts like Pussy Riot, Björk, Wilco, and Kælan Mikla. Their performances are noted for free-flowing improvisation and engaging audience experiences, solidifying their reputation as a must-see live act.

The song is like a bull having smoke from its nose and ears, Instrumentally coming from a heavy dimension, like the instruments are angry or depressed, stuck in their own mess. It still has this tender and caring melody that Hrabba sings. You could say that it’s a love/care song.”

Icelandic post-punk group GRÓA returns with their new single “Cranberry” via the US label FOUND. The track showcases the band’s distinctly distorted sound, blending a variety of vocal styles—from synchronized whispers and melodic chants to full-throated shouts—interwoven across snappy drums and buzzing guitars. The song reflects the intense instrumental backdrop that feels heavy and chaotic, as if the instruments themselves are expressing anger or depression. Despite this tumultuous soundscape, there is a tender and caring melody sung by Hrabba, making it a unique love or care song.

GRÓA fearlessly blends aspects of post-punk, noise-rock, and art-pop into a dynamic sonic hash with boundless intention. This innovative approach ensures that their music remains fresh and engaging, pushing the boundaries of traditional genres. “Cranberry” is a testament to GRÓA’s ability to merge emotional depth with raw, powerful instrumentation, creating a listening experience that is both challenging and captivating.
