Eraser: James Caan Vs Arnold Schwarzenegger
Hello everybody! Today we have one of those mid-90s action movies, Eraser.
ERASER
DIRECTOR: Chuck Russell
STARRING: Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Caan, Vanessa Williams, James Coburn, Robert Pastorelli
GENRE: Action
YEAR: 1996
COUNTRY: United States
John Kruger is a U.S. marshal who is assigned to protect Lee Cullen, who works for the Cyrez Corporation, a company that manufactures top secret weapons for the military. Lee knows about a scam going on within Cyrez Corporation, and the man behind it is determined to silence Lee, because without Lee, the FBI has no case against the Cyrez Corporation. After taking Lee to New York City to hide her, John discovers that his friend, U.S. Marshal Robert Deguerin, is the mastermind behind the scam!
Eraser is one of those Arnold Schwarzenegger action flicks during the mid-90s that actually showed how much an action star Schwarzenegger actually is. While Schwarzenegger botches much of the dialogue (which just happens with his kind of accent) he is definitely the action hero the 90s needed. James Caan has a great performance as corrupt U.S. Marshall Robert Deguerin, as he slowly loses his mind and murders more and more people because of it. James Caan, you are awesome as a crazy person with power. Eraser’s story overall isn’t half bad (for an action film) as it focuses around corruption and an arms deal featuring a kick ass electromagnetic pulse rifle.
Eraser suffers from one of the most common problems that plagues action films (especially in the 90s), the film is just too god damn predictable. It wasn’t too disappointing since they started the first act with a bang, having a major assassination attempt on Vanessa Williams with electromagnetic pulse rifles. That’s a nice lead in to my next big problem, Vanessa Williams. I thought that her performance seriously lacked any decent acting whatsoever. The writers didn’t give her very much to work with, but she still could have done so much more.
PROS:
- Arnold Schwarzenegger performance.
- James Caan performance.
- Interesting story.
CONS:
- Predictable plot.
- Vanessa Williams’ performance.
- Action movie cliches.
SCORE: 6.0 / 10
