Epic: A Slightly More Hardcore Version of Ferngully

Hello Everybody! Sorry I haven’t been posting as many reviews as I should be the last two weeks. I have been caught up in a television show and I haven’t had time to watch much of anything else, but I finished it today and will have a review for it for Anime Wednesday. Keep up to date on all of Media in Review’s reviews, and pay attention this week there should be a good number of them! On a final note, feel free to leave me some feedback, I would love to hear what my readers have to say. Anyways, on to the review!

Alright here it goes, another family film review.  For those of you who didn’t hear about Epic, it was because it was definitely released at the wrong time. Epic was released at the same time as Fast and the Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III, so it was mostly swept under the rug by pretty much everyone. Besides that, it still managed to take third place in sales at the box office and was received moderately.

Epic tells the story of a young girl (Amanda Seyfried) grieving over the loss of her mother (who she is obviously very close to) and visits her estranged father (Jason Sudeikis).  Sudeikis is a scientist who is convinced that there is a society of smaller intelligent beings living in the forest.  This sounds familiar doesn’t it?  The general gist of the story is almost identical to Ferngully in the 1990s, but the premise has a darker tone. This darker tone exists in the film in some parts, but is inconsistent throughout. I thought it would be a little more consistent, especially since the main antagonist was the Jew Hunter in Inglorious Basterds in 2009.

Epic definitely has a star-studded cast, there is such a variety of different styles from all different kinds of actors.  While some of them have decent performances (Beyonce Knoweles, Amanda Seyfried, Christoph Waltz, even Colin Farrell) but what can you expect from a film that has Pitbull as a Bullfrog who is supposed to be a mob enforcer. Come on, Beyonce is queen of the forest? While she does pull it off, it doesn’t make sense.

The best part of Epic is that the film is absolutely beautiful. The forest is absolutely amazing. All of the creatures of the forest come alive and just contribute to the beauty that the forest brings.

Pros:

• The forest looks amazing.
• Decent performances for the majority of the main cast.
• The Jew Hunter is still hilariously evil.

Cons:

• The rest of the cast is god awful.
• The story is quite lackluster.
• Beyonce is queen of the forest?
