Elephant Stone Share “Fascists Killed Yer Rock ‘N’ Roll” | New LP ‘ASHA’ Out August 28
Elephant Stone is the long-running Montreal project led by songwriter and sitarist Rishi Dhir, who has spent over twenty years blending Western psych-pop with Indian classical influences into a cohesive, evolving sound. What began in 2006 as an experiment in transcendental, sitar-driven psychedelia has developed into a fully realized studio vision, with Dhir taking on production, engineering, and mixing duties from his home studio, Sacred Sounds. The result is a tightly controlled yet expansive body of work where Eastern and Western musical languages are woven together rather than simply combined.
While early releases leaned toward polished psych-pop and spiritual exploration, the band’s more recent material—shaped alongside longtime collaborators Miles Dupire, Robbie MacArthur, and Jason Kent—has taken on a rougher, more immediate edge. Dhir’s extensive work with artists like The Black Angels, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beck, and the supergroup MIEN has fed into this evolution, pushing Elephant Stone toward a denser, more unpredictable sound. Across ten albums, the project has stayed rooted in psychedelic tradition while constantly deconstructing it, reshaping familiar influences into something more visceral, immersive, and emotionally direct.
“You’d have to be living under a rock to ignore what’s happening. I don’t claim to have the answers; this song is about giving the threat a name. It’s a reminder that we’ve seen this script before… and we’ve overcome it before.”
Where “Everything Evil” hits like a short, explosive burst of proto-punk energy, “Fascists Killed Yer Rock ’N’ Roll” slows things down into something heavier, darker, and more suffocating. Built around a thick, Black Sabbath-style riff, the track trades speed for weight, stretching out tension instead of releasing it. Subtle sitar elements thread through the arrangement, adding instability and texture as the song drags forward with deliberate intensity, turning its aggression into a slow-burning, almost oppressive atmosphere.
Lyrically, the song directly confronts the rise of fascism through a historical lens, framing it as a repeating cycle rather than a new phenomenon. Rather than leaning into abstract rage, it takes a clear-eyed, observational stance, underscored by lines like “All you fascists, you’ve all come and gone / We know yer game, we’ve all heard that song.” The accompanying video, which repurposes the unsettling 1963 film One Got Fat, reinforces themes of conformity and control. As the second preview of ASHA, Elephant Stone’s tenth album dedicated to frontman Rishi Dhir’s late mother, the track fits into a larger emotional and conceptual arc shaped by grief, hope, and resistance.
