Detroit Grunge Songwriter Zilched Drops Self-Directed Music Video For 2020’s Single “The Knife”

More and more artists need to keep drawing influence from rock music if anything just to prove Adam Levine wrong. On today’s dive into the deep end of the indie pool we have “The Knife”, the newest track from the talented Zilched. The woman behind the moniker, Chloë Drallos, has been developing the Zilched brand and sound since late 2017. Releasing her debut EP Pulling Teeth in 2018, Zilched introduced the masses to her still-developing noise-pop style. After snagging buzz around her debut, Zilched quietly honed her sound and released a handful of singles as her style continued to grow. Now three years into her career, Zilched dropped her fall 2020 release Doompop, displaying her skills as an artist in full force. Inspired by albums from her teens such as Nirvana’s Nevermind and Mary Chain’s Psychocandy, Zilched is worming her way into the indie world and will definitely be an artist to keep your eye on.

‘The Knife’ is love/hate. I wanted the video, with dancing improvised by Morgan McCaul, to visualize an inner monologue, where those different emotional powers start to take over and ultimately lead to release of that power.” – Zilched (on “The Knife”)

“It’s an honest reflection of my attempts to grow up and make sense of absurdity. I wrote the first song in my last month of highschool at 18 and finished recording/producing just a month after my 20th birthday. With these songs I wanted to go as deep into my insecurities and confusion, however immature I felt. Just write what I felt when I felt it in order to move on.” – Zilched (On Doompop)

After gaining plenty of buzz due to a live session on Audiotree back in January, Zilched is back to bring us a brand new music video for her previous single “The Knife”. Directed by Zilched herself, the music video shows that Drallos may have a hidden skill in filmmaking and pairs up with the original track’s original message. “The Knife” explores the feeling when you genuinely care for someone and have to experience the troubles and heartache around it. Letting Zilched’s grunge vocals and heavy guitar riffs take the lead, the track feels like it was ripped straight out of the 90s grunge scene that everyone is familiar with. Taken from last year’s debut album DOOMPOP, “The Knife” was a stand-out track from the album and it was only a matter of time until was given the music video treatment. If you haven’t checked out DOOMPOP yet, the album is definitely worth a listen if you need more grunge/noise-pop in your life.
