Anime Club: I Don’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying!
For this week’s anime club we have an interesting suggestion from one of our readers, I Don’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying!
I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT MY HUSBAND IS SAYING!
DIRECTOR: Shinpei Nagai
NO. OF EPISODES: 13
GENRE: Comedy, Slice of Life
YEAR: 2014
COUNTRY: Japan
The series centers around the daily lives of Kaoru, a hard working office lady, and her otaku husband, Hajime. Using well-known anime and otaku tropes and memes, the characters explore the conflicts and similarities between daily life and otaku culture in urban Japan. The witty dialogue accentuates the animation and sometimes slips into manzai-style humor.
First thing I want to point out is that this is an incredibly short anime, it only takes about 40 minutes to watch the entire season. i initially thought that it wouldn’t be any good just due to the short run time of 4 minutes each episode, but my previous experience with shorts (Hetalia) told me otherwise. This show is so ridiculous and out there that it is a great time. The characters are wonderful and the creators manage to put so much development into an hour that I have to praise them. Each episode also tackles a moment in the couple’s lives quickly and effectively.
Obviously as you are going into a short, don’t overly expect too much from this show. It is just a quick great time. You may be confused due to the overuse of otaku terminology (I was just a bit). Also the animation quality is quite low budget. It definitely works here in the form of a short but if it was to expand to a longer run time then I would have a problem with it.
PROS:
- Characters.
- Situations.
- Dialogue.
- Episode run time.
CONS:
- Animation style.
- Overuse of otaku terminology.
SCORE: 6.5 / 10
