2025 Juno-Winning artist Elisapie releases Inuktitut rendition of The Cranberries’ “Dreams” for Netflix series ‘North of North’

Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie returns with “Sinnatuumakka (Dreams),” an Inuktitut adaptation of The Cranberries’ classic “Dreams,” recorded for the second season of the CBC, APTN and Netflix series North of North. Following the international success of her 2023 album Inuktitut, Elisapie once again reshapes a familiar song through the lens of Inuit language and culture, giving its themes of hope and escape a distinctly Northern perspective. She says the song resonates deeply with Inuit life, where difficult conditions can make dreaming and imagining something beyond the present especially meaningful.

That connection carries directly into North of North, where Elisapie also makes a guest appearance. The new season continues to follow Siaja, played by Anna Lambe, as she takes bigger risks and makes bigger mistakes while trying to take control of her life in Ice Cove. Elisapie says she was moved by the way Siaja begins to open herself up to new possibilities, adding that the series creates space for Inuit audiences to dream. Season two, featuring both Elisapie and “Sinnatuumakka (Dreams),” is set to launch globally on Netflix later this fall.

“It’s a song that really resonates with the Inuit world, In the North, it’s cold, and life isn’t always easy. That’s why dreams take on a special place. They’re a way to escape and imagine something else.“

With Inuktitut, Elisapie reimagines 10 iconic songs by artists including Leonard Cohen, Blondie, Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac, translating them into her mother tongue and reshaping them through the sound and emotion of Inuktitut. Produced by longtime collaborator Joe Grass, each song is tied to a personal memory, loved one or formative moment in Elisapie’s life, turning the album into both a cultural reclamation and an intimate reflection on identity, language and home. Released in September 2023, the album earned widespread acclaim, including two JUNO Awards, six Félix Awards, a second Polaris Music Prize shortlist nomination, and international attention from outlets such as Rolling Stone, Vogue, KEXP and The Globe and Mail.

Born and raised in Salluit, Nunavik, Elisapie has long placed her connection to Inuit culture and Inuktitut at the center of her work. Since first earning a JUNO Award with Taima in 2005, she has built a career blending modern indie and folk influences with tradition, bringing Inuit language and stories to audiences around the world. Since the release of Inuktitut, she has performed more than 90 shows across Canada and toured throughout Europe, the U.S., Australia and Japan.
