NOTE: This review is specifically for the 2013 reboot.
Alright everybody! It is time for another reboot of one of our favorite tv shows! Last night (07/16/2013) the CW aired the 9th season premiere of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, a hilarious improv comedy show. Great, at least now the CW has a few decent shows to watch (Arrow, Nikita). Whose Line Is It Anyway?, from now on being abbreviated as WLIIA, had its original United States run from 1998-2007. The main cast of the show consisted of the host Drew Carey (now hosting The Price Is Right) and improv veterans Colin Mochrie, Wayne Brady, and Ryan Stiles. The show consisted of 4-6 skits which the actors would have to improvise in order for the show to go on.
Alright lets get to the premiere. The new reboot of WLIIA included many of the original skits and cast. The new host is Aisha Tyler who is famous for her stand up and the voice of Lana Kane on FX’s Archer. Plenty of the original jokes showed up, much to my surprise. They brought back jokes about Colin’s hair, Wayne’s singing, and Ryan’s shoes.
There have been some improvements to the show, they have included a fourth actor (much like the original run), but with more popular actors and personalities. While the fourth actor has always been rather popular, i have high hopes for changes. the coolest addition is a “special guest” contestant that will perform in one skit throughout each episode. A few examples are Maggie Q (Nikita) and Lauren Cohen (Maggie of The Walking Dead). They have included a few new games as well. For example “What’s in the Bag?” features three contestants using only props from the purses donated from the audience.
Alright so I have a few things that bother me about the new WLIIA. One, I love Aisha Tyler but she isn’t as funny as Drew Carey. Well she doesn’t have the chemistry with the cast like Carey did. Second, the fourth performer gets to perform less than they did originally. That is disappointing because they were typically hilarious since they often had no idea with what they are doing. Third, it feels like they are forcing the reboot on us. We will accept you with open arms, but only if you don’t try so hard.
You can watch both of the new episodes down below:
