Sylvia Black is a shape-shifting vocalist, bassist, songwriter, musician, performer, producer, and lifelong creative whose career began as a teen singing at a resort in Northern Japan. Ever since, music has been her constant, guiding her through a nomadic life that spans the American South, the East Coast, and the Pacific Northwest. Known for her moody, cinematic style, she’s become a quiet force in the post-punk and goth-romantic revival—an artist who builds her world from the shadows while maintaining full creative control as a writer and producer.
Now based in Los Angeles, Black continues to evolve, crafting intimate yet atmospheric productions that resonate with fans of darker indie music. Her latest project, Shadowtime, distills everything she’s known for: whispered confessions, swirling bodies in the gloom, and a lush, noir-tinged sound that feels both personal and otherworldly. It’s a testament to her ability to turn mystery and emotion into something immersive—proving she’s an artist listeners can sink into and savor.

Sylvia Black’s new single “Long Gone Gardens” introduces the world of Shadowtime, her upcoming album arriving January 16. Opening with a pulsing bassline and wrapped in her signature new-wave haze, the track draws on memories of the natural world she knew as a child—gardens tended by her grandmother—while carrying echoes of the Garden of Eden. The album, written, produced, and largely performed by Black, blends post-punk grit with cinematic, gothic atmosphere, creating a sound that’s both nostalgic and futuristic. With longtime collaborator Ruddy Lee Cullers shaping the mix, Shadowtime moves fluidly between dark dance-floor moments and quiet, emotional meditations.
Across its 11 tracks, the album deepens Black’s reputation as a defining voice in the modern dark-music revival.
