Singer Songwriter Ella Rosa Releases Dreamy Soul-Filled Cover of Sting’s “Englishman in New York”
Even though we are fully accustomed to it by now, there is something still alluring about a English singer and indie Britpop. On today’s dive into the indie world we are checking out “Englishman in New York”, the latest single by English singer Ella Rosa. Originally born and raised in Henley-On-Thames, Ella Rosa found her love of music once reaching the shore of the United States. Moving to Manhatten at the age of 11, Ella Rosa discovered her love of music through studying opera and music from the likes of Erykah Badu, The Police, Amy Winehouse, and Nina Simone. It wouldn’t be until she was 16 that she would upload her first single, “Myself”, to Spotify and hit the ground running. Her debut snagged the attention of many industry tastemakers such as Complex, EARMILK, and Wonderland Magazine. Since her debut Ella has released a number of singles and her YELLOW BLAZER EP, each garnering continued support from fans and industry movers alike.
“Sting has always been an idol of mine and when I moved to NY around the age of 12, it was sort of a culture shock for me. I thought there wouldn’t be many differences in the US culture compared to the UK culture but boy was I wrong! This record helped to put that experience into words for me.” – Ella Rosa
With already plenty of buzz and a single-packed 2020, Ella is already on the right path as an emerging artist. Taking a more underused approach to traditional indie pop, Ella has quickly developed and cemented her musical style…easily in line with her influences. Focusing on a more nostalgic sound, Ella uses RnB and jazz as a veiled backdrop for her more modern indie Britpop sounds to take center stage. Originally created by legendary artist Sting, Ella’s version of “Englishman in New York” hits entirely different from the original and almost presents itself as a completely different dish entirely. Perhaps Ella found the missing piece of the puzzle, with the original track just needing an extra injection of RnB and Soul to entirely seal the deal. “Englishman in New York” is just the first part of her next sophomore EP, which you can expect out later in 2021.
