Premium Rush: No Brakes!

Hello everybody! today we have an interesting film starring Joseph Gordon Levitt called Premium Rush.

PREMIUM RUSH

DIRECTOR: David Koepp

STARRING:  Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, Dania Ramirez, Jamie Chung, Wolé Parks, Aasif Mandvi

GENRE: Action-thriller

YEAR: 2012

COUNTRY: United States

Among the bike couriers in New York City, no one is more determined and reckless than Wilee, an ex-law student more comfortable on his brakeless bike than in a suit. One day, a Chinese foreign student named Nima arranges for him to deliver a vital envelope across the city. Unfortunately, a crooked cop, Det. Robert Monday, has a desperate need for that envelope himself and won’t take “No” for an answer. Now, Wilee finds himself relentlessly pursued by Monday and others in a situation becoming more complicated and dangerous by the minute. Together with his friends and rivals, Wilee must discover the secret of this dangerous delivery and make it through a gauntlet that will require all his cunning, daring and courage to survive.

Premium Rush is one of those films that you find on the later lineup of Encore or Starz. The film is entertaining, taking an interesting spin on the traditional chase film premise. Instead of cars or on foot, they are on bikes! Joseph Gordon Levitt, Diania Ramirez, and Wole Parks all put on decent performances as rival security couriers/romantic interests. Definitely nothing award worthy, but decent enough for the film. Premium Rush also touches on social issues like human trafficking and smuggling. There are some very cool scenes when Joseph Gordon Levitt freezes time so he can analyze which way to go in heavy traffic.

I really didn’t like Det. Robert Monday as the antagonist of the film. Is character is written poorly and is not portrayed very well by Michael Shannon I felt that he lacked any real danger to Wiley, shit even the bike cop who kept chasing after him did a better job. I also want to point out that this film could have bee much longer, I felt it was too short and we could have used a little bit more filler in the second act. A little romance with Dania please!

PROS:

  • Majority of main cast performances.
  • Interesting take on chase premise.
  • Entertaining plot.

CONS:

  • Lame antagonist.
  • Michael Shannon’s performance.
  • Lack of romantic arc.

SCORE: 6.8 / 10
