Oakland Power Pop Group The Goods Release New Album ‘Don’t Spoil the Fun’
The Goods are an Oakland power pop trio blending chiming guitars, catchy hooks, and lush British Invasion-style harmonies into a sound that feels both timeless and fresh. Led by singer-songwriter Rob Good, a veteran of the Oakland underground scene who has played with Ryli, Sob Stories, and Cocktails, the band delivers clever, emotionally resonant songwriting without slipping into nostalgia. Rounded out by bassist Cherron Arens and guitarist Gabriel Monnot, The Goods first introduced their jangly, hook-driven style on their 2023 debut The Goods EP (Dandy Boy Records), drawing comparisons to The Byrds, Big Star, and Teenage Fanclub, and establishing themselves as a standout voice in modern power pop.
Oakland power pop trio The Goods return with their first full-length album, Don’t Spoil the Fun, arriving October 24th, 2025 via Dandy Boy Records. Written and produced by frontman Rob Good (Ryli) in his Oakland studio, and joined by bassist Cherron Arens and guitarist Gabriel Monnot, the album blends jangling guitars, melodic hooks, and heartfelt songwriting. Drawing inspiration from The Byrds, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, and Matthew Sweet, the record balances classic influences with a fresh, modern energy. Its focus track, “Sunday Morning Out of the Blue,” captures the tension and resolution of a relationship argument through bright guitars and melodic basslines, while the accompanying video reflects the emotional push and pull of trying to make love work.
Across eleven tracks, the album explores love, connection, and self-reflection with warmth and empathy. Songs like “April Fools” and “Remember” shift between exuberance and introspection, while “Photograph” honors a lost Oakland venue, and “Aurora” celebrates staying rooted. “Me and My Ghost” meditates on solitude, and “Keep It Safe” closes with a gentle reminder to protect one’s mental health. With its mix of fuzz-drenched hooks, bright guitars, and candid storytelling, Don’t Spoil the Fun showcases The Goods leveling up their sound while creating a record that feels both familiar and distinctly their own.
