NY Pop Act Eighty Ninety Drop Intimate Indie-Pop Single “Heart on the Line”
While we are always suckers for some feel-good catchy indie pop, we appreciate when artists strip back the production and give listeners a more personal experience. On our latest peek into the indie world we are checking out “Heart on the Line”, the latest from Eighty Ninety. Bursting onto the scene back in 2016, Eighty Ninety hit the ball right out of the gate with their debut single “Three Thirty”. Quickly after its initial release, the single reached #2 on Spotify’s Global Viral Charts and they seized the opportunity to drop their full EP Elizabeth. Now snagging over 25 million streams online, the Eighty Ninety catalog was even selected by Taylor Swift for her official Spotify playlist “Songs Taylor Loves”.This latest single will join the duo’s previously released singles “Happier” and “Better With Friends” on their next EP, The EP, the is a collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Gian Stone (Maroon 5, Dua Lipa) and will drop later this year.
When we produced ‘Heart on the Line’ we wanted it to feel personal — almost like it was recorded late at night after one of the midnight phone calls we’re writing about in the song. But we also wanted the choruses to feel cinematic because even though feelings around these moments are personal, they can feel so huge. To show that contrast, we used minimal verses and lonely, distant counter melodies with sweeping, harmony-stacked choruses.”
After covering a handful of singles from New York indie-pop act Eighty Ninety, we thought we had a clear idea of what kind of track to expect to come from their camp. While we expected another bouncy indie-pop bop to keep us upbeat as we head into the holidays, instead we are treated to a soft indie single that still fits into the Eighty Ninety style. Exploring that familiar make-or-break moment in a relationship where everything can come crashing down, “Heart on the Line” is a superb single that demonstrates the band’s pure love for intimate storytelling, regardless of the form it takes. Regardless, Eighty Ninety crafted yet another single with a catchy melody and we doubt that this single will be leaving our indie rotation any time soon.
