Lone Survivor: Operation Red Wings

Hello everybody! Today we have Mark Wahlberg’s new military drama Lone Survivor.

LONE SURVIVOR

DIRECTOR: Peter Berg

STARRING:  Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster, Eric Bana

GENRE: War, Drama

YEAR: 2013

COUNTRY: United States

Lone Survivor is a military drama, directed by Peter Berg, based on the real life United States military operation code named Red Wings. The films follows Seal Team 10 as they sneak into a Taliban occupied village to terminate a prominent leader of a terrorist sect. This four man team (which consists of HM1 Marcus Luttrell, LT Michael P. Murphy, GM2 Danny Dietz, and ST2 Matthew Axelson) is sent in to terminate the target, but their Intel is incorrect and they are quickly discovered. We watch as they fight for their lives, just to survive and make it back home. The four man team is portrayed by Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and respectively.

Lone Survivor has many great characteristics that make it a definite award nominee. The performances of the main cast are absolutely spectacular. The film spends the first half of the film establishing the relationship between these team members and while the film focuses on Wahlberg by the end of film, it shows us that you are never truly alone. I have to mention that while the overuse of exposition is normally a deal breaker for me, but I felt that it works. The ending they explain why the Afgan villagers helped Luttrel (Wahlberg) and it tributes all of the men that died as apart of Seal Team 10.

While I thoroughly enjoyed my first viewing of Lone Survivor, there were a few things that I didn’t like about it. I felt that the film’s title is contrary to the message of the film. They spend 35 minutes building this “family unit” and they spend an hour killing them off one by one. I mean, Wahlberg is only alone for maybe 20 minutes of the film. When I first saw the trailer for the film, I thought it would be more like Man vs Wild, but I was obviously wrong.

PROS:

  • Amazing performances by main cast.
  • Awesome gunfights.
  • Interesting camera uses.
  • Some comedic dialogue.

CONS:

  • Disappointing ending.
  • Mixed messages.
  • Arabian stereotypes.

SCORE: 8.6 / 10
